KLW Foods & Farm's "Hope Farm" is a sustainable agriculture initiative dedicated to empowering young farmers in Liberia. Through comprehensive training programs, microgrants, and the provision of agricultural inputs, we recruit, train, and equip aspiring young farmers with the skills and resources needed to establish successful microfarms. By focusing on sustainable practices and local market integration, we aim to significantly increase food security and economic stability in Liberia.
The Hope Farm was founded by internationally acclaimed Liberian activist Dr. Kimmie Weeks. Motivated by his experiences nearly dying from starvation and disease as a child in Liberia, the program began first as a a project under Youth Action International, but seeing the potential for scale and sustainability, the decision was made to morph the project into a a standalone nonprofit organization. Initial support for the project was provided by the Greener Diamond and directors Daniella Hunter, Charlie Stuart Gay, Xander Shultz, Zoe Pappis, and Theresa Nabuule.
Central to our mission is the empowerment of young people, preservation of the environment, and ensuring national food security. We offer microgrants and agricultural starter kits, which include chickens, seeds, and tools, to help young farmers establish their own microfarms after they have completed their six-month training program.
Our impact extends beyond individual farmers to the broader community by providing quality and affordable sources of nutritious food. Our model not only boosts incomes, but also ensures a consistent supply of fresh, high-quality produce, contributing to improved food security in the region.
With a vision to scale our model and reach over 100,000 young farmers across Liberia within five years, we are committed to fostering economic development and community resilience.
To establish a sustainable agriculture training program at Hope Farm aimed at empowering young people and local smallholder farmers with the knowledge and skills necessary for sustainable organic agriculture practices, thereby addressing the challenges of agricultural sustainability in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and affected regions.
To promote the adoption of organic farming methods, enhance food security, and foster economic development in Liberia and West Africa through hands-on training and capacity-building initiatives, mitigating the impacts of population growth, climate change, civil conflict, urban migration, corruption, poor technology, and policy and management issues on agricultural sustainability.
To create a supportive learning environment and infrastructure that enables students and farmers to gain practical experience in sustainable agriculture techniques and access necessary resources for their agricultural endeavors, thereby empowering them to contribute to improved agricultural productivity, resilience, and food security in their communities.
To develop a plantain and cassava flour production facility at Hope Farm, contributing to value-added processing and diversification of agricultural products, promoting economic growth, and meeting the growing demand for gluten-free and healthier food alternatives locally and internationally.
